Aviva Insurance Launches US Specialty Platform With Property Focus

Mashrukh Khan: Aviva has formally entered the United States specialty insurance market with the launch of Aviva Specialty, a wholly owned platform headquartered in New York City. The new operation will begin underwriting commercial property risks in the fourth quarter of 2026, distributing cover through open market brokers and program administrators. The business will write on Aviva Insurance Limited paper, giving partners access to the group’s financial strength while operating with the flexibility of a dedicated specialty platform.

According to the company’s announcement, the initial focus on commercial property forms the foundation for planned expansion into cyber, specialty and financial lines, and specialty casualty. Mike Karmilowicz, president of Aviva Specialty, described the approach as combining an experienced specialty team with a purpose-built platform designed for responsive underwriting and service. Jason Storah, chief executive of Aviva’s UK and Ireland general insurance division, framed the move as a deliberate step in the group’s broader specialty growth strategy, emphasizing a long-term commitment to the U.S. market. Reporting from Insurance Business and Business Insurance noted that the launch follows earlier plans for an onshore surplus lines presence to complement Aviva’s existing London market capabilities.

In parallel, Stand, a San Francisco-based property insurer focused on catastrophe-exposed homes, has raised 70 million dollars in a Series C funding round that values the company at one billion dollars. The round was led by Saga Ventures with participation from Lowercarbon, Eclipse, Equal Ventures and other investors, bringing Stand’s total capital raised to 130 million dollars. The company reported that the total value of property it insures has grown tenfold over the past year, rising from one billion dollars to more than 10 billion dollars.

Stand uses physics-based modeling to assess individual homes against wildfire, wind and other perils, then works with owners on resilience improvements that can qualify properties for premium discounts of up to 70 percent. The insurer currently operates in California for wildfire risk and Florida for hurricanes, issuing policies through rated carriers and supported by established reinsurers. Coverage of the funding and growth figures appeared in reports from Insurance Innovation Reporter and related industry outlets.

These developments reflect continued interest in both traditional specialty expansion and technology-driven approaches to catastrophe risk in the U.S. property market.
