Non-life insurers settle Tk 1,242cr claims, Tk 3,599cr remain unsettled in 2025: IDRA

Staff Correspondent: Non-life insurance companies in Bangladesh settled only a small portion of claims in 2025, leaving a large volume of liabilities unsettled, according to the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA).
Data from the regulator’s four quarterly reports show that insurers paid Tk 1,242.25 crore in claims during the year, while Tk 3,599 crore remained unsettled. This means only 8.56 percent of total claims were settled, with more than 91 percent still unresolved across the sector.
At the beginning of 2025, insurers were already carrying Tk 3,055.80 crore in unsettled claims from previous periods. During the year, an additional Tk 1,740.37 crore in new claims was reported, further increasing the burden on companies.
Although claim payments continued throughout the year, progress remained slow relative to the total volume of claims. Payouts varied across quarters, with the highest disbursement recorded in the final quarter. However, the overall settlement rate remained low.
New claims also rose sharply toward the end of the year, adding further pressure on insurers. Settlement performance fluctuated during the year but showed no significant improvement.
