Dentist sentenced to 15 years for arson in insurance fraud scheme

News desk: A Conecuh County dentist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to intentionally setting fire to his own dental practice in an attempt to collect insurance proceeds.

Dr Douglas Patrick O’Connor, 56, pleaded guilty on February 3, 2026, to one count of second-degree arson and one count of first-degree insurance fraud. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the sentencing on March 6, 2026.

The charges stem from a March 2025 explosion and fire that severely damaged O’Connor’s dental office in Evergreen, Alabama, near the Florida state line. Investigators said surveillance footage allegedly showed O’Connor igniting the fire.

Authorities said the blaze caused approximately $63,000 in damage to a neighboring Alabama State Troopers’ office.

Following a 10-month investigation led by the Alabama Attorney General’s Office and State Fire Marshal, officials concluded that O’Connor deliberately set the fire amid mounting personal and business debt, intending to file a fraudulent insurance claim.

‘This defendant shattered the trust placed in him by his patients and community,’ Attorney General Marshall said in a statement. ‘He endangered lives next door and attempted to profit from his own criminal act.’

Officials have not yet released details regarding restitution or the value of the attempted insurance claim.

Insurance fraud remains a significant concern for the industry, contributing to higher premiums for policyholders and increased investigative costs for insurers.
