India Insurance Handles Complaints Effectively with Second Place Ranking

Mashrukh Khan: India’s Insurance Division under the Department of Financial Services has secured an impressive second place ranking in the Group A category of the Grievance Redressal Assessment and Index for May 2026 demonstrating strong performance in handling public complaints within the insurance sector. The banking division under the same department placed sixth in the assessment released by the government highlighting a solid overall showing for financial services entities in addressing customer concerns.
This latest achievement places the insurance unit among the top performers in a category that includes ministries and departments receiving at least 500 public grievances per month. The Department of Financial Services noted that its banking and insurance divisions collectively manage more than 250000 grievances each year and have consistently ranked among the top 10 ministries and departments in the Grievance Redressal Assessment and Index since November 2025. These rankings which are compiled by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances evaluate how effectively government bodies resolve public complaints and provide timely redressal.
Efforts to improve grievance handling have been multifaceted and proactive. Since January 7 2024 the secretary of the Department of Financial Services has personally reviewed 20 randomly selected complaints in each session with complainants participating directly in discussions alongside chairpersons managing directors chief executive officers and senior management from relevant financial institutions. These high level reviews aim to build greater customer trust while enhancing the overall quality and speed of resolutions across the sector.
In addition the department has organized targeted workshops on grievance redressal in collaboration with key regulators and industry players including the Reserve Bank of India the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority and public sector banks. These sessions have focused on identifying root causes of common complaints and implementing practical improvements in how institutions respond to and resolve customer issues ultimately fostering a more responsive and customer centric environment in India’s financial services landscape.
The strong ranking for the insurance division comes at a time when India’s insurance market continues to expand rapidly amid rising awareness of protection needs and ongoing regulatory initiatives to strengthen consumer safeguards. Effective grievance handling plays a crucial role in maintaining public confidence particularly as the industry grows and more citizens rely on insurance products for health life property and other risks. By prioritizing timely and fair resolutions authorities are not only addressing immediate complaints but also contributing to the long term development and trustworthiness of the sector.
This performance underscores the Department of Financial Services commitment to accountability and continuous improvement in public service delivery. As India’s insurance penetration deepens such rankings serve as important benchmarks that can guide further enhancements and encourage other departments to adopt similar best practices in customer grievance management. For policyholders and industry stakeholders alike the results signal positive momentum toward a more efficient and transparent insurance ecosystem.
