Munich Re Specialty Launches Australian Primary Market Entry

Int’l Insurance Desk: Munich Re Specialty has formally entered the Australian primary specialty insurance market with a new operation based in Sydney that will underwrite property, construction and engineering, mining and surety risks for commercial and mid-market clients.

The launch forms part of the group’s broader strategy to place underwriting and claims expertise closer to local brokers and customers while drawing on the financial strength and technical resources of the wider Munich Re organisation.

Chris Mackinnon has been appointed to lead the Australian business with responsibility for growth and relationships across the specialty broker community. Supporting him are Chris Harnett as head of underwriting, Angus Kench as head of claims and Alison Percival as head of partnerships.

The local team holds underwriting authority, allowing decisions to be made on the ground rather than referred overseas, and the operation will also provide access to products available through Munich Re Specialty’s Lloyd’s syndicate as well as the broader capabilities of the Munich Re Group.

The Australian launch builds on Munich Re Specialty’s existing Asia Pacific presence, which already includes offices in Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai. The company has said it will continue to invest in partnerships with the managing general agents it backs in Australia while expanding its own direct underwriting footprint.

Industry coverage from Insurance Journal and Global Reinsurance notes that the move is intended to give brokers a new source of capacity at a time when the local specialty market remains competitive and capacity is actively sought by mid-sized commercial clients.

Mackinnon, a well-known figure in the Australian market who previously held senior roles at Lloyd’s, described the launch as the culmination of careful planning designed to bring Munich Re Specialty’s global expertise to local clients in a responsive and consistent manner.

The operation is underwritten through Great Lakes Insurance SE and is positioned to serve businesses seeking specialised cover in sectors such as infrastructure, resources and construction, where demand for tailored risk solutions remains strong.
