Financial Advisers Lead Singapore Life Insurance Market Again

Insurance News Desk: Singapore’s financial adviser channel has clawed back the top spot in life insurance distribution for the first half of 2026, generating S$1.35 billion in weighted new business premiums. That figure marked a 35.9 percent jump from the same period a year earlier and gave advisers a 37.3 percent share of the total market, the largest of any channel.

Bancassurance, which had briefly edged ahead in the previous quarter, slipped behind as independent advisers regained momentum.

The recovery comes at a moment when a large volume of long-duration policies is reaching maturity. Policyholders received S$8.02 billion in maturity benefits during the half-year, up more than 50 percent from the year before.

Insurers have been quick to launch campaigns aimed at persuading customers to reinvest those proceeds into new plans, creating fresh opportunities for advisers who maintain ongoing relationships with clients.

Industry observers note that the shift reflects both stronger adviser productivity and a gradual cooling in bank-driven sales after an earlier surge. Financial advisers appear to have capitalised on the need for more personalised advice around critical illness cover and retirement products, areas where face-to-face discussions still carry weight.

Claims data for the period also showed life insurers paying out S$1.14 billion in critical illness, death and total permanent disability benefits under individual policies, an 11 percent rise that underscores the continuing demand for protection.

The numbers were reported by Insurance Business, which tracked the latest distribution statistics released for the Singapore life market.

While bancassurance remains a major force, the first-half results suggest advisers have reasserted their role as the primary channel for new business, at least for now. Whether the lead holds through the rest of the year will depend on how effectively both channels respond to the wave of maturing policies and any further shifts in consumer preference.
