MSIG USA Underwriting Chief Takes Global Role

Int’l Desk: MSIG USA has promoted Brian Botkin from chief underwriting officer to international chief underwriting officer at parent company MS&AD Insurance Group, a move that expands his reach from the U.S. market to the insurer’s broader global operations.

The announcement came this week and positions Botkin to help shape underwriting strategy, governance and portfolio management across MS&AD’s international businesses.

Botkin joined MSIG USA in 2024 after more than three decades at AIG, where he most recently served as deputy chief underwriting officer for international financial lines and oversaw a portfolio spanning more than 40 countries.

During his time at the U.S. specialty unit he built the enterprise underwriting strategy from the ground up, introducing greater consistency, discipline and data driven insight as the company grew rapidly under chief executive Peter McKenna. Gross written premiums nearly tripled to about $2 billion over three years, and McKenna has credited Botkin with much of that underwriting transformation.

“He has been instrumental in advancing our underwriting organization as we have grown, bringing greater rigor and insight to how we manage our portfolio while never losing sight of the importance of underwriting expertise and judgment,” McKenna said in a statement reported by Insurance Business and PR Newswire.

Hironori Morimoto, MS&AD’s group chief global officer, added that Botkin brings deep specialty underwriting experience from one of the world’s most dynamic insurance markets and will help connect best practices across the group’s businesses.

MSIG USA had already named Carrie Brodzinski as the new chief underwriting officer a week earlier, bringing her over from The Hartford where she led global specialty underwriting. The succession appears seamless as Botkin steps into the wider international role.

Industry observers note the promotion reflects both Botkin’s contribution to MSIG USA’s recent growth and MS&AD’s ongoing push to strengthen specialty capabilities and underwriting consistency worldwide.
