Sixfold Launches AI Underwriter for Life and Health Insurance

Global Insurance Desk: Sixfold has rolled out a new AI Underwriter aimed squarely at life and health insurance, according to a report published by FinTech Global on September 2. The tool is described as a governed AI agent that reviews medical records, prescription histories, lab results, financial details and other evidence, then applies each carrier’s own underwriting guidelines to produce a clear recommendation, the reasoning behind it and a suggested next step for the human underwriter.
The launch follows Sixfold’s earlier AI Underwriter for property and casualty business, which went live in June. The life and health version is built to handle multiple product lines including term life, disability, long-term care and critical illness.
Underwriters in these areas routinely spend considerable time sorting through dense medical files and cross-checking internal manuals before reaching a consistent decision. Sixfold’s system is designed to surface the most relevant impairments and link each finding back to the original source documents so the rationale remains transparent and auditable.
Founder and chief executive Alex Schmelkin noted that life and health underwriting involves far more than simple summarization.
“It is impairments, products, manuals, evidence, exceptions, and judgment,” he said. “Getting this right meant building an AI Underwriter that understands the work behind the decision, earns underwriters’ trust in the details, and meets the responsible AI bar this industry deserves. Life & Health has not had a real technology moment in a long time. We think this is it.”
The company, founded in 2023, already serves a roster of carriers that together write roughly $270 billion in gross premium. Its platform has processed more than 1.5 million submissions across dozens of lines in North America, Europe, Latin America and Australia.
Early users of related tools have reported faster case processing and higher productivity, though results naturally vary by book and workflow.
The new AI Underwriter for life and health is available immediately and can operate as a standalone system or integrate with existing underwriting workbenches. Carriers retain full control over guidelines and final decisions, with the technology intended to support rather than replace professional judgment.
