Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Capital Position Remains at Highest Level

Int’l Insurance Desk: AM Best expects Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance to keep its capitalisation at the strongest level for the medium term while also holding on to solid profitability. The rating agency points to the company’s robust capital base, careful management of that capital and a balance sheet free of debt as the main supports for this view.
At the same time the insurer is pushing further into international markets and should see bigger contributions from its stake in Canopius Group after lifting its ownership from just under 19% in 2025 to a little over 40%.
Samsung Fire is using both Canopius and its own Samsung Reinsurance unit in Singapore to grow the reinsurance book across the Asia-Pacific region. Domestically it already sits at the top of the South Korean non-life market with roughly 22% share measured by gross insurance service revenue last year. That scale, together with the Samsung Group affiliation, gives it brand strength and access to related business at home and abroad.
The company posts the highest regulatory solvency ratio among local non-life peers and intends to put excess capital to work on growth opportunities as well as returns to shareholders. Even though swings in the market value of its affiliated stock holdings can introduce some capital volatility, AM Best notes that the risk-adjusted position stays resilient under a range of stress scenarios.
Operating results have been consistently strong. Underwriting has remained stable, the combined ratio sits relatively low against domestic competitors, and investment income has been solid.
Looking ahead the agency expects the long-term insurance segment to continue performing well on the back of favourable claims experience and the ability to generate new contractual service margin.
Samsung Fire also relies on a large network of tied agents for its long-term products and retains the flexibility to adjust distribution approaches so that growth and profitability stay in balance.
