City Bank Amex Cards Offer Key Insurance Protections

Mashrukh Khan: City Bank’s American Express credit cards in Bangladesh offer a suite of insurance protections designed to safeguard cardmembers and their families against unforeseen life events, medical crises and financial burdens arising from outstanding balances. These facilities, available across the range of Amex products issued by the bank including Platinum, Gold, Blue and specialized co-branded variants, combine automatic coverage with optional programs that cardholders can enrol in for enhanced security and are delivered through partnerships with insurance companies such as Guardian Life Insurance Limited, City Bank’s primary bancassurance partner which underwrites a wide range of the bank’s life and related protection products.
One of the cornerstone protections is the All Accidental Death Insurance, provided free of cost to every eligible cardmember without the need for separate enrolment. Under this facility, in the event of the cardmember’s death resulting from any accident, a fixed sum of 500,000 taka is paid directly to the nominated beneficiary. This coverage operates independently of any outstanding balance on the card and serves as a straightforward financial support mechanism for the family during a sudden loss. The benefit is automatic upon card activation and remains in force for as long as the card membership is active and in good standing.
Complementing the free accidental death cover is the optional Double Benefit Insurance, also referred to as City Shield coverage. This program addresses the dual financial impact of death or permanent total disability. When a cardmember enrols, the insurer settles the entire outstanding balance on the card and simultaneously pays an equal amount to the nominee.
The maximum payout under this dual structure is capped at 2,000,000 taka or twice the outstanding amount, whichever figure is lower. For example, if the outstanding balance stands at 800,000 taka at the time of the insured event, the program would clear that 800,000 taka debt and disburse another 800,000 taka to the nominee, resulting in a total benefit of 1,600,000 taka. Should the outstanding exceed 1,000,000 taka, the combined settlement and nominee payment would be limited to the 2,000,000 taka ceiling. Enrolment requires payment of a premium calculated at 0.40% of the monthly outstanding balance, deducted or billed accordingly.
This percentage-based premium means the cost scales with the cardmember’s utilisation; a cardholder carrying a balance of 500,000 taka would incur a monthly premium of 2,000 taka, while a lower balance of 100,000 taka would attract only 400 taka. The coverage activates upon enrolment and continues as long as premiums are paid and the card remains active.
A further layer of protection is available through the optional Critical Care Insurance program, which focuses on medical treatment costs associated with serious illnesses. Cardmembers who opt in gain access to benefits covering treatment for 18 specified critical diseases. These conditions encompass cancer, stroke, myocardial infarction, renal failure, paralysis, coronary artery surgery, major organ transplant, blindness, heart valve replacement, surgery for disease of the aorta, multiple sclerosis, aplastic anemia, benign brain tumour, end-stage lung disease, major head trauma, complete deafness, loss of limbs and loss of speech. For holders of the American Express Platinum Credit Card, the maximum annual coverage under this program reaches 300,000 taka.
Lower-tier cards may carry different annual ceilings, though the structure of the benefit remains consistent in targeting the financial strain of diagnosis and treatment for these high-cost conditions. Premiums for Critical Care Insurance are typically structured in a manner similar to the Double Benefit program and are assessed as a percentage of the outstanding or as a fixed enrolment charge depending on the exact product terms at the time of opting in. Once enrolled, eligible claims are processed against the stated annual limit, providing direct financial relief for medical expenses related to the listed diseases.
These insurance facilities operate under clear eligibility and claims protocols. Coverage generally requires the card to be in good standing, with the insured event occurring while the membership is active. For the Double Benefit and Critical Care programs, enrolment must be completed in advance, and premiums must remain current. Claims are subject to standard documentation, medical verification and the insurer’s assessment, with payouts directed either to clear card liabilities or to designated nominees.
The 0.40% premium rate for Double Benefit Insurance, the fixed 500,000 taka accidental death sum, the 2,000,000 taka dual-benefit ceiling and the 300,000 taka annual critical care limit for Platinum cards together form a structured safety net that addresses both immediate debt clearance and longer-term family support. Cardmembers are advised to review the precise terms applicable to their specific Amex product, as minor variations can exist between card tiers and as schedules are periodically updated by the bank and its insurance partners including Guardian Life Insurance Limited. Through these layered protections, City Bank’s American Express cards aim to deliver not only transactional convenience but also meaningful financial resilience against life’s most significant risks.
