Premium Growth Lifts AIG Third Quarter Results

Insurance News Desk: American International Group posted stronger than expected third quarter results as higher investment income and solid premium growth more than offset a rise in catastrophe losses. The company reported adjusted after-tax income of 2.06 dollars per diluted share, ahead of the roughly 1.89 dollars analysts had forecast. Net income attributable to common shareholders reached 844 million dollars, or 1.60 dollars per share, compared with 519 million dollars, or 93 cents, a year earlier.
General Insurance net premiums written rose 7 percent to 6.7 billion dollars, or 8 percent on a constant dollar basis. Growth was broad based, with international commercial lines and global personal insurance both contributing. Underwriting income in the General Insurance segment, however, fell 29 percent to 564 million dollars. Catastrophe losses climbed to 283 million dollars from 100 million dollars in the same period of 2025, driven mainly by severe convective storms across North America. The combined ratio moved to 91.3 percent from 86.8 percent a year earlier, reflecting both the higher catastrophe load and less favourable prior year reserve development.
Strip out the storms and the underlying picture looked steadier. The accident year combined ratio excluding catastrophes held at 88.4 percent, virtually unchanged from the year before, while accident year underwriting income excluding cats rose 6 percent to 756 million dollars. Net investment income provided additional support, rising on the back of higher fixed income yields and changes in the value of the investment portfolio.
President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Andersen said the company maintained strong underwriting performance despite a more challenging market environment. Over the first nine months of 2026, AIG delivered double digit growth in premiums, generated more than 2 billion dollars in underwriting income and improved the combined ratio by 140 basis points to 89.2 percent. The board also declared a quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share payable at the end of December.
The results show AIG continuing to expand its top line while navigating elevated weather related claims. Investment income remains a meaningful cushion as the commercial insurance market stays competitive and catastrophe activity stays elevated. These figures come from AIG’s third quarter earnings release and related coverage of the company’s financial performance.
