Int’l Insurance Desk: China’s Ping An Insurance reported a sharp decline in net profit for the first nine months of 2026 as weaker investment returns weighed on the bottom line. The group posted net profit of 96.645 billion yuan, or about 14.5 billion dollars, representing a 27.3 percent drop from the same period a year earlier, according to a stock exchange filing covered by Reuters.
The main pressure came from investment income, which tumbled 68.6 percent year on year to 49.489 billion yuan. Chinese equities have been volatile, and insurers including Ping An have increased their equity holdings in response to government calls to support the market. That exposure left the company more vulnerable when share prices moved lower.
Despite the fall in reported net profit, the company’s operating profit, a measure that excludes short term investment swings and one off items, rose 8.3 percent. This suggests the underlying insurance businesses continued to generate steady results even as market conditions affected the investment portfolio.
New business value in the life and health insurance segment, an indicator of the profitability of newly sold policies, declined 13.3 percent to 30.987 billion yuan. Industry observers noted that policy sales across Chinese insurers slowed in the third quarter amid tighter regulatory scrutiny of the bancassurance channel and competition from bank deposits.
On a more positive note, the number of retail customers grew 1.9 percent from the end of last year to reach 255.8 million by the end of September. The group continues to emphasise its integrated finance model and technology driven services as it navigates a challenging investment environment.
The results highlight the sensitivity of large Chinese insurers to domestic equity market movements. While core operations showed resilience, the sharp drop in investment income underscores the risks of higher equity allocations at a time of market uncertainty.
