Indian Insurer SBI Life Reports Quarterly Profit Growth

Insurance News Desk: SBI Life Insurance reported higher quarterly profit as the company continued shifting its product mix toward more profitable retail policies, even while growth in its group business slowed. The insurer posted a net profit of 5.49 billion rupees, or about 58 million dollars, for the three months ended 30 September, up from 4.95 billion rupees in the same period a year earlier, according to Reuters.
Analysts had anticipated an improvement in profitability as SBI Life increased its focus on higher margin offerings such as traditional term insurance and non-participating policies. These products deliver fixed benefits rather than returns that depend on the insurer’s overall profits. The move helped lift the value of new business, a measure of expected profit from newly sold policies, by 12 percent to 18.6 billion rupees. The associated margin also improved to around 29 percent, up from near 28 percent a year earlier and 26.2 percent in the preceding quarter.
New business growth, however, moderated after the previous quarter had benefited from large lower margin group contracts. Annualised premium equivalent sales, a key indicator of new business volumes, rose around 7 percent to 63.7 billion rupees, compared with 36 percent growth in the quarter before. Net premium income still advanced more than 8 percent during the period.
The results underline the tradeoff many Indian life insurers face between volume growth and margin expansion. By prioritising retail protection and non-participating savings products, SBI Life improved the quality of its new business even as overall sales momentum eased from the strong group contribution seen earlier.
Management has indicated confidence in meeting full year targets for individual rated premium growth and margins, suggesting the product mix shift remains central to its strategy.
