Hong Kong Life Premiums Jump 89% in Q2

Global Insurance Desk: Hong Kong’s life insurance market delivered another striking premium jump in the second quarter of 2026 even as the number of new policies sold barely moved.

According to a Jefferies research note dated 27 October, total life premiums climbed 89 percent year on year, with the surge running across every major distribution channel. Agency forces recorded a 91 percent rise while banks posted an 86 percent increase, showing that the growth was not confined to a single sales route.

The flat trend in new policy counts points to a clear shift in the mix of business. Higher average premiums per policy, stronger demand for savings and investment linked products, and possibly larger case sizes appear to have driven the overall premium expansion rather than a broad expansion in the number of customers taking out fresh cover. Jefferies noted that the pattern was widespread and not limited to any single insurer or product line.

The strong second quarter figures come against a backdrop of ongoing regulatory scrutiny and tougher year on year comparisons for some regional life players. Yet the Hong Kong numbers suggest that demand for protection and savings products remains resilient among both local and mainland Chinese clients who continue to view the city as a preferred hub for wealth related insurance. Insurers and banks appear to have capitalised on that interest by focusing on higher value contracts even while the volume of new policies stayed largely steady.

The Jefferies findings were picked up in regional industry coverage in late October and reinforce the picture of a market that continues to generate substantial premium growth through product mix and distribution efficiency rather than pure volume expansion.
