Chinese Insurance Business of AIA falls by 5%

Global Insurance Desk: AIA Group reported a 5 percent decline in its value of new business for the third quarter of 2026 as softer results in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland outweighed gains elsewhere. The insurer’s VONB fell to 1.4 billion dollars in the three months ended 30 September from 1.5 billion dollars a year earlier.
The drop was partly attributed to an exceptionally strong sales base in Hong Kong and mainland China during July and August of the previous year. Despite the quarterly setback AIA’s VONB for the first nine months of 2026 still rose 5 percent to 4.6 billion dollars from 4.3 billion dollars a year earlier with growth recorded across all reportable segments except Thailand. Other markets outside the two largest operations delivered a combined 18 percent rise in VONB during the third quarter helping to cushion the overall result.
September brought a clear recovery in momentum with sales growth exceeding 25 percent year on year. Management said it expects stronger new business performance in the fourth quarter and remains on track to exceed its previously stated target of 9 to 11 percent compound annual growth in operating profit after tax per share between 2023 and 2026.
Group chief executive and president Lee Yuan Siong pointed to sustained demand for protection health savings and retirement products across AIA’s markets. The company also reported year on year increases in the number of active agents new recruits and agency leaders together with deeper engagement among its bank partners. Agency fundamentals continue to strengthen Lee said adding that the business remains well positioned for further growth.
